Thanks to all the Vets out there.
We appreciate you.

Well Season is sneaking up on us. The Island took a beating with all the rain and there is a lot of road damage and some of our folks had a lot of damage from the mud slides and flooding. Lots of cleaning up to do. Wapa has done an excellent job of cleaning up the roads so we can get around. It will all be ready for when you come visit but go slow as there is still a lot of debris on the roads.

8 Tuff Miles is upon us. We who are able to run across this beautiful island,
wish to honor and give support to many who have laid their lives on the line in service to our country.
Nearly 34,000 troops have been wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. Wounded service members have
endured many months of surgeries, physical therapy, prosthetic fittings and other life adjustments.

Moe is running 8 Tuff Miles to help raise monies for Team River Runner. TRR gives military veterans
and their family members an opportunity to find health, healing and new challenges through paddling sports.
The benefits of TRR have as much to do with social support, finding emotional strength and recreating
personal identity as they do with athletic activity. TRR has brought groups of wounded veterans to St John twice,
with more trips planned. These trips have been inspirational for all concerned. read more

Oh My! We have lost another of our St John Family.
Jimmy Herrin passed away and has left us all with a heavy heart.

There was a memorial for him at Skinny Legs on March 22nd

Many of you who come to Skinny Legs every year or so will probably remember
one of our old bartenders and favorite characters Warren. We are sad to say he has passed away. Gone but not forgotten.

More pictures thanks to Arlene Altman when she spent time with Warren in Texas last summer.

C. Warren Cole Passes
The Coral Bay family lost another member recently as long-time resident
C. Warren Cole passed away.
Cole was born on July 3, 1958, in Midland, Texas and called St. John home for many years.
He was handling family issues in Texas when he succumbed to complications from pneumonia on Sunday, February 22.
He is survived by a sister and step-brother and a huge family of brothers and sisters in Coral Bay.
A memorial service will be hosted in Warren’s honor at Skinny Legs in the near future.
I will put up the memorial service date as soon as I have it.
Warren will be missed by many and his infectious laugh will always be remembered.

Congratulations to Bryan and Kathy Sica married 2-15-2009

Ohhh Wayne you left us too soon. You will be missed. Our thoughts are with your friends and loved ones.
You ruled at Horseshoes!!!!. Service for Wayne Lowry was held on 2/19/09.

Requiem for Wayne

On this island of hills and sky,
I said let me live and let me die.
Now I'm home, forever here,
Never far, always near.

This the land from many I chose,
And the sea around it which flows,
Across my life, now ever after, too,
I walk its hills of green and swim its sea of blue.

This is how you should think of me:
Here on this island is where he wanted to be,
Where he lived his life as he saw it true,
Where every sunrise made him new.

Here he found a life of joy,
Through the man could peek the boy,
Here he found what life truly meant,
And here he stays, forever content.

- - Read by Homer Hickam at the Wayne Memorial, Skinny Legs, Coral Bay, St. John, USVI, Feb. 19, 2009

Linda and and Homer Hickam went to Drunk Bay with their friends and made a little memorial for Wayne. It is over to the right, at the wooden structure, bench area, if anyone would like to add to it.

These days so many of our friends and family are going through hard times. I would like to say that I am so grateful to be living in a place where the community gets together to help each other out. Another of our ol' Skinny Legs family "my favorite Margie" Margie Smith, is having her own bout with cancer. Some of you will remember her as your waitress and others by her sailing articles in the early days of the Sun Times. She is such an amazing writer I want to share her blog with you all and I know we will all learn something positive from it. It is titled Cancer is Hilarious - Mean Jean

Raise a toast to Skinny Legs!

We have been named one of the best bars in America, by
Esquire Magazine
"Skinny Legs is one of those rare points on the face of this dirty globe from which all good feelings emanate," says the magazine's review. "Travelers wash up at Skinny's for the harmonic convergence and stay for the rum punch and a cheeseburger grilled behind the bar in the open
for all the world to smell."

Valentines Day Don't Forget the ones you love.

On June 30th we had the 2006 St John Commodore's Cup Race which we hosted. This years 3 day Commodore's Cup race kicked off on June 30th with the Captain's Meeting and Welcome Party was at 6:30 pm at Skinny Legs. This year We added an Optimist race for the kids. Our own Sarah won the raffle drawing a 10'6" AB Inflatible with a 15hp Yamaha Engine. Which was perfect as she worked hard to make this race a success. All proceeds for this event benefit the Kids and the Sea (KATS) program of St John. Here at Skinny Legs we have always supported childrens programs.
Click Here for COMMODORE'S CUP pictures

With all of our support, todays children have a better chance of living a quality life tomorrow. Locally, Skinny Legs supports several programs. The Kids And The Sea (KATS) program is our pet project. Check it out at 'kidsandthesea.homestead.com'. Many of the people you see hanging out at Skinnys are now and have been the volunteers who teach the children in the KATS program. Robin, Cat, Jen and all the rest of the volunteers are just phenomenal.

Some of our favorite people in Coral Bay are Dorothy and Peter Muileburg owner of "Breath". Many of you have sailed with them through the years. Peter now has a book out you won't want to miss. Click here to read an excert from our own Peter Muilenburg's book "Adrift on a Sea of Blue Light"

June 4th - Coral Bay Open - One of the most fun days at Skinny Legs. It was a fund raiser to help Steve Levin pay for medical bills from his accident when his heavy equipment rolled over on him awhile back. Glad to say that Steve is much better now. Fun was had by all.. Click here to see.

Congratulations Moe - Official Time - 3:46:09
We are all very proud of you!

Toni and I went to Boston (April 11 to 18) where I ran the Boston Marathon on April 17, 2006. It was my sixth marathon, and I am very grateful for the good health that allows me to do so.

Moe likes to run. Now Moe is supporting 'dmsesports.com' with its efforts to encourage physical fitness for children, families and their communities. DMSEsports through AIM (Americans In Motion) has launched a nationwide grassroots network to encourage physical fitness. Please check out
'dmsefoundation.org' and 'joinaim.org'.

Moe ran the Boston Marathon April 17th and is running the Portland Oregon Marathon on October 1st. With these runs, Moe would like to ask for your support for these programs. Please check out their sites and if you feel inclined, any donation will help. Thank you all for your support and thank for just checking us out.

Sad days at Skinny Legs. Our beloved Doug Sica has passed away. On Wednesday March 22nd, 2006 Dougie left our physical world. He is sadly missed by all of us here at Skinny Legs, St. John and around the world. Many will remember Doug from the Backyard Bar in Cruz Bay where he worked for 12 years. The Backyard Bar was synonymous with Doug Sica. Doug and I (Moe) opened Skinny Legs together in 1991. Those of us who were fortunate enough to know him got to know a truly wonderful human being. Doug has a warm, loving, compassionate spirit. That spirit has touched many and is in large part why Skinny Legs has enjoyed such success. Doug’s spirit lives in each of us. Click here to check our web pages and enjoy his life with us. On the kids pages you’ll see Doug making funny faces with kids. They were lucky kids. In our guest book you’ll hear from friends both old and new.

We miss his smiling face. His ‘Sit up straight’. Giving kids ‘noogies’. Standing at the end of the bar and just watching the action. I can see him wearing the big tool belt, knee pads and the long socks over them skinny legs. Did you know that sometimes he wore rubber bands around the knee socks to hold them up because his legs were so skinny or the elastic was losing its grip? Many years we have spent together. Many memories shared. He remains a part of us, of me, forever. Thanks to all of our friends who have written and called.

Right now, it’s difficult to think of other things, but we must. Life is full of every thing. Joy, sadness, happiness, frustrations, anticipation, all emotions. We continue, as we should.

A huge Thank You to Jean (aka mean jean) for all her wonderful work
and for the 30ish years of friendship. Why do they call her mean?
