Doug Sica

Doug Sica, co-owner of Skinny Legs Bar and Restaurant, died Wednesday March 22nd 2006 after a short illness. He was 56 years old. Sica was born in Red Bank, N. J., and moved to St. John in his early 20s. For those of you that know him you know how he touched our hearts and always made us smile. He is loved by many.

Our Hearts go out to his wife Mary Pat, his children Christopher, Brian and Rachel, his family and his extended family which we are all a part of.

He spent many years working as a bartender at the long-closed Back Yard Bar in Cruz Bay before joining with Moe Chabuz to open Skinny Legs in 1991.

I started out with them at the beginning. Doug was my friend and father in his own way and he taught me so many good things. He will always be in my heart.

Thanks Moe is letting me make this page in his memory. - Mean Jean

Cap’n Fatty Goodlander said in best in this excerpt from Seadogs, Clowns and Gypsies

Doug knows more about a lot of the people than he wants to. He’s a friend, confidant, and father confessor to half the people on the island. He’s often hunched across the bar, earnestly talking to a customer – eyes darting everywhere for a refill signal – listening to a Life Story.

Doug seems to realize that people’s Life Stories are important to them. Doug sees it all, hears it all, tastes and smells it all – but like any good bartender, nothing is ever repeated, revealed, exposed, or ridiculed.

I googled Doug Sica and came up with some funny things. Click here for a link to one of my favorites by Paul Daughtery

I also found comments on line and from e-mails to share:

One of my fondest memories of Doug was after the original Cruz Bay Cowboys (pre Cow Bay CruzBoys) played at the Backyard, and nobody would go home. At about 4 AM, after numerous warnings, Doug took out the hose they use to wash the bar at night and hosed everyone down. Luckily the music equipment had already been stashed! I love you, Doug - Tom Funkhouser

I am sorry to hear about Doug. In all my years that I lived in the Islands Doug was always mellow and thoughtful. I always respected Doug for his cool attitude. My sympathies to you and his family. Love, Bert....yes, Toke' Bert

"I just kind of thought that on STJ some things would always stay as they were and some people would always be there. "

"Doug did a great job livin the dream - seemed to overstand what a great life it is. Hopefully he has caught up with Howie. Peace "

Fortunately we had an opportunity to spend some time with Uncle Doug in November 2005, not long before his passing. That was a day I will never forget, as in 6 short hours we had more fun than you can imagine. Thank you Uncle Doug, We love and miss you....Your nephew Arthur

Thinking about Doug. This was a great saloon man. A breed apart. Seemed always to enjoy the world of burgers, rum and beer, customers, bartenders, waiters and waitresses. He was a great glad hander, name recaller, and he was quick with dry t-shirts for our youngin's after a retreat to Skinny's from a downpour. We here in Greenwich Village spoke of him last night, remember him fondly, and feel the deep sadness of this fabulous character who knew the value of a gin mill. Bon voyage. - Greg

Doug will remain with us forever as a man that brought a smile to our faces and
who warmed the cockles of our heart. He will never be forgotten and will be sorely missed by all those lucky enough to have known his wonderful presence. Our deepest sympathy to his family and to all his friends. We are so sorry for your loss. - Jane and Paul Bartko
