1 of 2 Again Welcome to our web site. Here's some info which we hope will make your visit a bit more pleasant. When you visit us on St. John, there are some things which may make your stay less annoying to the people you're with and to us. And make us less annoying to you. First of all, life is generally slower here than somewhere else. That's why we moved here. So relax. Really relax. Don't expect anything to happen too fast except maybe getting a burnt bum.So be careful and always use sunscreen. Tradition says that when you greet someone-in passing, at work, anywhere-say 'Good Day' or "Good Mornin' or 'How are you today?' This just makes people a wee bit friendlier, especially when dealing with a clerk or salesperson. A traditional response to 'How are you today?' is 'Oh, pretty OK' The sun here is extremely strong so don't be shy with sun screen. Glop it on and you'll still get burnt. Protect your eyes with good sunglasses, UVA/UVB protection. If you're in the water, the sun can really fry your butt if not your back. Wearing a t-shirt while snorkeling can give you some added protection. Be extra careful with children. We have them and we know what it's like to have unhappy sun burnt kids. A hat is a good idea. When in town-that's Cruz Bay-don't go shirtless or in your bathing suits. It's considered nude and rude. You also have to wear a shirt or cover up when in a bar or restaurant, it's the law. Apparently pedestrians DO NOT have the right of way, we'll check this out further, so be careful. A woman was struck by a truck in St. Thomas and was given a ticket for walking on the wrong side of the street. There was no sidewalk. And this was in downtown. We won't tell you about the woman who received a traffic ticket for not having her dog strapped in a seat belt. KEEP LEFT! GO SLOW! We drive on the left. Why? We're not sure but everybody else does so we do too. Skinny Legs suggest you drive slow (within the speed limit-still 20 mph) and keep left. Many locals drive in the middle of the road and are usually driving pretty fast. Taxi buses are big and have a lot of momentum. Water and cement trucks are bigger and have even more momentum. So watch for them, we do. We learned the benefits of driving slow years ago. First; things hurt a lot less when you hit them slowly. Second; if you do go off the road, you won't fall as far, that is providing you hit the bushes. But be careful getting out of the vehicle. We had a friend who drove off the road. The car got caught in the brush about 20 feet off the road. They got out of the car and fell another 30 feet. And remember, It Is Better To Yield Than To Receive. |
